Redwork...in Any Color

As I wrote about earlier, I have been busy working away on the Over the River Quilt. I'm a newbie to redwork (well in this case blackwork) but can't imagine why I didn't do it before. It is as easy as pie to learn, works up quickly and embroidery really adds something special to quilting. I'm loving every second of it. Here are a couple of great clips to get you started. In the first one Pat Sloan shows the basic stem stitch...this is the basic stitch used for redwork.

Next up is the French Knot...this is used for little dots ... useful for eyes, flower buds and other things that are...well small and round! They are fun to do too!

I'm a bit lazy sometimes and don't like to knot off my embroidery all the time. Sometimes when I know the stemstitch is going to dead end I do a laced running stitch...I'm sure that is just wrong but it works for me... there's no video for that one but here are the directions with good pictures: laced running stitch .

If the basics aren't enough for you ...why not register in Cheryl's embroidery class this fall...she'll show you how to do the tricky wicky stitches while making a beautiful sampler from Crab Apple Designs! I'll be taking that class for sure! Here are the Details:

What I did on my Summer Vacation....

I'm baaaack... if anyone was wondering why it was so quiet in the store and on the blog scene...I was away fishing all week. Now I don't actually fish but I do spend a lot of time in boats and on the dock "supervising" and stitching away. We were up on the South Magnetawan River (which is in central Ontario). My husband caught a decent pike, some bass, and a pickerel. The kids caught the usual collection of sunfish, rock bass and frogs. Enough about the fish!

I brought a fantastic project along with me.... Over the River & Through the Woods by Crab Apple Hill Designs. I think it is one of the most exquisite and original designs I have seen in years. It takes a traditional "redwork" design and brings it to new heights by working it in a black and sepia colorway and setting it in rectangular bars. I made tremendous progress and finished 2 panels and have the third well under way. All that embroidery is very relaxing! Ann told me that the fabric I ordered to do the pieced blocks arrived while I was away... I'll keep you posted on my progress!

We have quite a few patterns from Crab Apple Designs in the store and Cheryl has been working away on one that will be up in the store soon too! We are assembling all the accroutements you will need to work on these wonderful projects...redwork fabrics, 1930s fabrics, Week's Dye Works Floss and Perle Cotton (these are glorious overdyes)! If there is something from them that you love...just let me know and we will bring that in too. It was so hard to pick ... everything they do is scrumtious!

Fall Schedule - Now Available

Well ladies ... the fall schedule is ready! We have paper copies in the store. If you would like one mailed to you please email me with your full address at judy@sew-sisters.com. There is a PDF file available if you would like that please send me an email as well.

Our web mistress Maria Michaels Designs is hard at work getting all the classes up on our website ... I have been inundating her with updates, changes, tweaks, and pictures so check back in a week or so and it should be all hunky dory by them! She is about half-finished at the time of this posting ... but I can assure you that is entirely my fault not hers!

We have an awesome roster of classes for you to choose from. From traditional to art quilting, from embroidery to knitting, from beginner to advanced there truly is something for everyone.

Here is a sneak peak at Irene Dewar's breathtaking Darjeeling Quilt:

Have a great long weekend everyone...I will be gone fishing but the store will be OPEN on Saturday from 10:00 - 5:00, closed Sunday and Monday and then back open as usual Tuesday to Friday 10:00 - 5:30.
