Fundamentals Sew Along - week 35

Hi Everyone:

Where has the summer gone?  Even though fall is my favorite time of the year, I am sad to see the end of summer. I am enjoying some time at the cottage sewing and as promised this weeks blog post.

My Favorite Sewing Spot

This weeks block is called Propeller.  It is an interesting take on the Pinwheel block.  The first step is to piece 4 half square triangle squares using fabric #1 and #3.  Don't forget to trim those little triangles off the corners of your squares.

Add A Triangle To Your Half Square Triangle Squares

Sew 2 triangles to your pieced squares to make a pieced triangle.

Fundamentals Sew - Along Week 34

Hi Everyone:

Can you believe that we are two thirds of the way finished!  I am really enjoying this journey.  I hope you are as well.

This weeks block is called Fox and geese.  It is a variation of last weeks block.  You will need to make 2 pieced triangles just like you did last week and then sew the pieced triangle to a large triangle to make a square.  You will need to make 2 block segments this way.

Next you will sew half square triangles squares from fabric 1 and 3 triangles.  You will need to make 4 of these.

Fundamentals Sew - Along week 33

Hi Everyone:

Well the Olympics are over and things are back to normal in our house.  I must admit I got a lot done on my English Paper Piecing project while watching the Olympics, another week and I might have gotten the top finished.

This weeks block is called Buckeye Beauty.  First we are going to sew  fabric # 1 triangle to a fabric # 2 square. Press.  You will notice the triangles overhang the square. Trust me this works.

Square And Triangle With Right Sides Together
When it comes to pressing, I find it is very easy to distort triangles.  It helps if you keep the heat of the iron away from the bias side of the triangle. If you  place the iron down carefully on the seam, you don't need to press the  whole segment.

Press Seam Carefully So Not To Distort
Sew another triangle # 1 in place.  Press to make a pieced triangle.  Make 2 of them.  Sew a fabric # 2 triangle to the pieced triangle to make the squares.  Make two of them.

Pieced Triangle

Repeat this process with fabrics # 1 and 3. Make 2 squares with fabrics # 1 and 3. You have 2 options when assembling this block.  I will let you decide which one you like the best.  See pictures below.

Option 1: Gold Triangles In The Middle
Option 2: Grey Triangles In The Middle
I chose the second one.  If you are doing the 30's your finished block will look like this.

If you would prefer to have the yellow triangles in the middle for the 30's feel free to change it up!

Thanks Anita for your comment on my 30's hexagon English Paper Piecing project.  I would love to see the one you are working on.  Next time you come to the store, bring it along you know how much we love show and tell.  Have a good week everyone!

Fundamentals Sew Along - Week 32

Hi Everyone:

Are you all enjoying the Olympics?  I am, I  have a hand project that I am working on while watching the events. I'm at the boring part of the project, which is sewing the black diamonds and triangles.  At last count I have 66 more diamonds and about 40 + triangles. So working on the fundamental block is a nice change.

30's Reproduction English Paper Piecing Project
This weeks block is called  Mosaic.  It is similar to the star blocks that we have been doing the last few weeks. The difference being this weeks block has a square in  a square block in the centre of the star.  Sew a square in a square from fabric #2 square and fabric #4 triangles. Join the triangles on the opposite side of the square.  It makes it easier to center the triangles on the square.

This is your finished block.  Those quarter square triangle blocks are going together quickly.  We are going to be real pros by the end of this project!  Back to handwork and the Olympics, see you next week.

Fundamentals Sew Along - Week 31

Hi Everyone:

August is upon us.  Where does the time go?

I cannot believe the name of this weeks block.  It is called Swamp Patch.  I wonder who is responsible for that name.  I googled it, and yes it does exist.  Mind you the half square triangle blocks that are in the corners of the block can be flipped with the darker triangle on the inside and it gives the block a whole new look.  Try it before you put the block together and see what you like best.  I just followed the directions and did what I was told.  The last 3 blocks have been very similar, so assembly directions for the last two weeks should be helpful in guiding you through this weeks block.

Assembly for Swamp Patch Block
If you do decide to flip your corner triangle block so the dark part is to the inside of the block it will make the block look much different than the last two.  I will let you make the artistic decision that suits you.  This is what your finished blocks look like.

I thought you might want to see the last three weeks blocks together.  It was a coincidence that two of them are in the same colourway.
